A swimming pool, when used properly and wisely, can be a life enhancing possession. However, it is critical that pool owners remain aware at all times of the potentially hazardous properties of a pool, particularly when it comes to young children who leave the house without a parent or caregiver realizing it. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) Chairman Ann Brown, "Drowning happens quickly and silently, often without any splashing or screaming. It can occur in just the couple of minutes it takes to answer the telephone." The CPSC recommends preventative measures in the form of layers of protection.

This includes placing barriers such as fences and walls around your pool to prevent access, using pool alarms and safety covers, closely supervising your child, and being prepared in case of an emergency with lifesaving equipment and a first aid kit nearby.
